Jingle Bells Rock!

Kapipal

Things don't always work out the way I plan them. Take for example my grand idea to do a Christmas CD this year. I love Christmas time as I get to spend it with my whole family every year. So of course I wanted to make the music for occasion. That was my idea anyway...

A producer I was working with had first pitched the Christmas album last year. He was working with another singer and he'd wanted to do a Christmas album. I thought I'd convinced him to change his mind and roll with me on the project, but this producer is kind of known for being a bit flakey (hence me not mentioning his name;). I should have considered that when he said we'd do it. Well, I got started picking the songs I liked and going over the songs he said he'd liked. But by summer we still hadn't done anything toward recording and he'd stopped acknowledging that we'd agreed to do the album. So I decided to do it on my own! But eventually realized that that would have meant that I would have to drop a lot of things I had on the go (including writing for my next EP 'Phoenix Rising'). It just wasn't feasible. Which sucked, 'cause I was so stoked to do the album. Christmas has always been a special time for me that I luckily to spend with my whole family. So it was with heavy heart that I had to ditch the Christmas album idea (for now!). But that got me thinking. If I couldn't do a whole album why not do a new version of some old classics. Hence 'JINGLE BELLS ROCK!'.

The song was produced by: Danny Argyle; the video shot by: PHATT al; and featured in the video as 'The Dolla'$' are some amazingly talented friends: Jesse, Erin, Rachel, and Emma. I hope you enjoy! Have a safe and happy holidays!! ;*

Starting My New Album (Gung-Ho!)

Kapipal

I've got the butterflies all over again!! I'm finding it hard to sleep and I'm stressing out!! I'm worried about my finances and how little time I'm going to have!! And I'm happy as all hell to have these old friends back!!

It's never easy starting a new recording project. I have to organize my whole life around getting the album done (if I actually want to finish it in any appreciable time). I have to seriously look at how much the whole thing is going to cost: demo'ing, arranging, finding/ working with/ paying for the producer, recording, mixing, mastering, photographs, album artwork, pressing, promotion, touring, and misc!! Yeah, it's a huge financial commitment!! All of that while trying to craft the best material I can and get my artistic vision across and studying dance, acting, and other artistic pursuits to better my craft and pay the bills. It's enough to drive you crazy if you let it. But, I wouldn't want to have it any other way. I've found a strength and stamina that I never would have believed I had while I was at Humber College studying Jazz, bussing it to open mic after open mic, and back up singing for Jully Black, and Joni NehRita. Back then I could only marvel at these amazing musicians creating their own visions and letting the crowds into their secret worlds. How would I ever be able to get my world crafted enough for you to want to come and kick it with me!?! Enter the butterflies, insomnia, stress, and lack of time. Each of those were met by creativity, innovation, stamina, and love. That last four letter word is what really got me through all of the elements involved with my last release 'Learning To Fight', and why I'm happy to have the adversity back in my life:)

I'm actually very very blessed to be able to live a life where I can express my creative freedom and have you all join me. And while I might pout, kick, and scream at times there is absolutely nowhere else I'd rather be than right here starting my new album;) For all of you starting something new in your lives GUNG-HO!!!

Crowd Sourcing Is Not Begging!!

Kapipal

Crowd Sourcing Is Not Begging!!

CROWD SOURCING has become an important component to my (and a lot of indie artists) model of getting my new album made. It's taken me a while to understand that I have friends, family, and fans that are down to be part of growing the Dana Jean Phoenix brand of NuFunk! You see learning to fight is somewhat a state of mind. You have to psyche yourself up and go take the world on by yourself! Or so I'd lead myself to believe...

...You see as an independent artist I've found that I've had to really rely on self preservation to get things done. I can't depend on the music fairy (I grew up believing in) to come and magically make my music dreams come true. That was the rigid mind state I'd worked myself into a year ago. I was so caught up in doing everything myself with the release of my first EP 'Learning To Fight' that I started to burn out fast. But even as I started dropping the ball left, right, and center due to fatigue I refused to seek help! "If you want something done right you've got to do it yourself!!" I mantra'd myself every night. Then one day a friend cheerily asked me how everything was going, and before I could think I said "lousy, I'm so tired all of the time and I'm thinking of quitting this whole fuckin' thing!' - WOW, did I just blurt that out? - I thought to myself! But what was funny was that my friend just stared at me. When I apologized for ranting he just stared at me. I was apologizing a second time, due to the uncomfortable silence, when he asked me what I needed him to do! "Oh, nothing" I said sheepishly. But the amazing thing is he wouldn't take no for an answer and he proceeded to ask me to tell him about all of the work I had to do to promote, sell, distribute, and tour in support of my music. He then TOLD me that I was crazy to not ask for help from the people who enjoyed my work, and that as one of my fans (God bless him eh;) he was more than willing to help me get my stuff out there, all I had to do was ask. And that's what I did. I asked him to help me hang posters for my show at the Rivoli, and he came out with me on four nights and helped me blanket the city for the show.

I had gotten into such a do-it-yourself state that I had forgotten that as a wholly independent artist I didn't have to rig up a bullshit major label facade. I could ask for help when I needed it and it wasn't weak or stupid or charity. It's real and I sincerley appreciate every iota of help in bringing the NuFunk to you all, with what has become to be known as Crowd Sourcing!

My Awesome (Wo)Manager

My Awesome (Wo)Manager

So recently I realized that I need a manager! I meet people and get business cards and promptly lose them (or they get lost in the abyss which is my 'everywhere' bag!), I see great opportunities on-line - bookmark - and then forget about them, I need someone to handle phone calls from important people and make sure that my business is handled!

But there's a caveat, you see I'd have to hire a manager, and by having to hire a manager I'd have to PAY a manager! Now that brings up an interesting question: What's the worth of what I need a manager for? Am I generating enough income to justify paying somebody 10-20% of that income? Will that person bring in enough to justify themselves!!

Which brought me to a realization: I already have a person who fits the bill! ME!!! I have no cause to lose business cards (I've organized by bag!!), I have marked calendar events based on the bookmarks I MUST follow up on, I've began scheduling 1 hour a day to deal with phone calls, and I HAVE to make sure my business is handled. It's not easy!! But it is absolutely true: Being your own boss means that you must be willing to sacrifice for your own career. If you won't do this for yourself no amount of money paid to a third party will guarantee you success! Get mindset ready to handle success and you will be surprised by the success that mindset will help generate! Be your own awesome manager!!;)

FLEX YOUR FIERCENESS!

I watch America's Next Top Model, every episode, every cycle. WHY? Yes, I'm entertained by the reality show theatrics, but it goes deeper than that. Every week these girls are put through the model grinder and it applies directly to me (and to you!). Have you ever seen a person getting a simple direction and some how not be able to follow it? And you think to yourself "What's wrong with them?!?" or "If that were me I would rock that pose!" Only to find yourself in a situation were you are the one not being able to follow the simple instruction!!

Relax, it happens to everyone - as I'm learning;) And a lot of the time it comes down to not feeling FIERCE!! Yes FIERCE! That disco feeling that the musical theatre and fashion divas have known about for decades. When you know that you are supposed to be where you're at. You've practiced and practiced and done the work and you know really deserve to be here. Now you just need to relax into who you want the world to see and allow yourself to trust yourself in the situation. Take a deep breath and really listen to what you're being told. If you don't understand something ask for clarification - don't fake it by nodding and pretending to understand (it will take you out of the FIERCE zone - because you'll know you don't believe you can do what you're being asked to do) - that clarification will aid you in being comfortable enough to flex your FIERCENESS!!

Now I'm not saying that you must watch ANTM to learn these lessons, but it's always good to stand outside of yourself and see others make your mistakes. And when you shake your head and say "OMG! What an idiot", put yourself in their shoes and figure out how you would handle the situation to your most FIERCE potential;)

Keeping Learning To Fight, FIERCE PHOEN-ITES!!!

Big Girl Can't Be Tamed or Little Girl Lost?

HEY PHOEN-ITES!

Something I'd like to share with you: I was reading a recent article on Miley Cyrus' new video for her song, 'Who Owns My Heart' and how it's getting the 'Parents Television Council' concerned.

"her racy new music video, "Who Owns My Heart?," has been slammed by the Parents Television Council. Funnily enough, when you check the list of folks sitting on the advisory board for this conservative watchdog group, the biggest-name celebrity listed there is—you guessed it—none other than Billy Ray Cyrus!"

Even the girl's own father is trying to tell her to take it down a few notches? So - is it true? Miley Cyrus really can't be tamed?! Check her latest vid:

It's interesting how time and time again we have these sweet & wholesome teen idols become so sexually provocative overnight. It happened with Britney, Christina Aguilera, and even Lindsay Lohan. And it seems as though each year, they're getting younger and younger. For 17 year old Miley in particular, how does affect her fanbase when it seems like only yesterday she was prancing around innocently as 'Hannah Montanah'...

"It is unfortunate that she would participate in such a sexualized video like this one. It sends messages to her fan base that are diametrically opposed to everything she has done up to this point. Miley built her fame and fortune entirely on the backs of young girls, and it saddens us that she seems so eager to distance herself from that fan base so rapidly."

To read the full article, click the link below:
http://new.ca.music.yahoo.com/blogs/stopthepresses/309085/mileys-new-video-parents-council-would-like-to-tame-it/;_ylt=Ahw068op1Jszb873CgT.pRkD5SUv

As an artist, its so important for me to know who my fans are and to give them what they want. Afterall, its through their support that I'm able to do what I do.

Same goes for Miley. So I question if its smart for her to change her image so drastically and so suddenly. I get that she's a growing woman - but if sex becomes your only 'schtick', then how can you sustain a career with so little substance?

For me, sexy comes in feeling empowered, and Learning to Fight. (Just listen to my album, "Learning To Fight", available on iTunes, to hear more about how important self-empowerment is). And its important for everyone to know what their definition of sexy is.

What are you thoughts? Is Miley gaining a wider audience, or is she alienating her largest fan base?

Some food for thought.
Stay Sexy y'all, and Keep Learning To Fight.

What's Your EXCUSE?

Hey PHOENIX FAM!

Hope this finds you alive and well as we fully fall in to autumn!

I've been thinking about the most recent episode of America's Next Top Model - Cycle 15, Episode 4 airing on Sept. 30th, and I can't help thinking about how the trials and tribulations of these runway-hungry females applies so closely to being an artist in today's challenging and exciting industry, and how if you're not willing to put in the work to be the best, then get outta the race!!!

One of the contestants, Liz, is single mother from Texas and started out as being one of my favourites, because of the strength and confidence and maturity she seemed to exude. But as the episodes keep going by, she continues to have some of the weaker photos - but more importantly, always has an EXCUSE for why her photoshoots aren't going well, or why she can't perform to her ultimate potential.

Check out this youtube video for some insight @ 7:10...

It always, "Ive got makeup in my eye", or "The harness is too uncomfortable", or "My haircut looks too boyish". In any competitive industry, excuses are just NOT acceptable and will not get you anywhere. No one wants to hear about why your photos, vocals, or performance was not up to par. You are simply just paving a way for other hard-working individuals to take your spot in line!

In my journey of becoming the First Lady of NuFunk, I've had to learn that making excuses on behalf of lazy behaviour is just not acceptable. And I find that once you free yourself from that trap, and force yourself to ask "Is my excuse valid? Or Did I just not put in the work?" you can start to evaluate just how badly you want something.

Something I thought I'd share.

Hope this finds you well. Keep working hard, and Keep LEARNING TO FIGHT!

What’s in YOUR fridge?

What’s in YOUR fridge?

Photobucket

Does it contain SUPERFOODS?
FOOD has the power to make us feel SUPER GREAT or SUPER LOW. Being mindful of eating the right foods for your body can help you to maximize all of your performance capabilities. (see the link to the article ’10 Superfoods’ below) I LOVE ALL KINDS OF FOOD, but anyone who is lucky enough to have been born in North America – the land where nothing is unavailable to us, has unlimited choices to what food they’re putting in their bodies. As a recording artist in the music industry I have to make sure I’m making the right food choices – not only to ensure I’m looking my best (onstage, in photos, in music videos,) but also FEELING my best in all these situations – therefore maximizing my performance at all times.
Like all Phoenix-onians – I stray off the course every once and a while. But I’ve had to really grasp that food is such an INTEGRAL part of the equation for success that its irresponsible for anyone wanting to be successful to completely throw healthy eating to the wayside!!!!
It’s all about moderation, consistency, and really paying attention to how your body reacts when you consume different foods.
I found what works for me is eating a diet that’s high in protein (ex: chicken, red meat, tofu, beans, nuts) and low in carbs. I tend to stray away from the pastas, breads, and even watch how much rice I eat. If I do have any carbs, it’s always WHOLE WEAT. Sometimes even a full serving of whole wheat carbs can make me feel tired and sluggish, so I just make sure the my meal is complete with enough tofu/turkey/chicken and vegetables so that I’m fully satisfied.
TEA is also something that I have a lot of. It’s zero calories (if you keep sugar and milk out of it) and it can help to both energize & calm you. Ginger tea is always key for me on the day of a gig and the day after. As a singer, drinking lots of tea keeps you hydrated, and thus your vocal chords stay moist and happy!
Also, remembering to eat throughout the day is an important way to keep our bodies running efficiently and smoothly. Even if I’m busy with rehearsals, shows, interviews, etc.. I’ll try to plan ahead and make sure I have portable snacks with me to munch on throughout the day!
Now check this article on 10 SUPERFOODS that you can incorporate everyday to help you maximize YOUR performance!

WHAT'S YOUR 'LOOK?'

Photobucket

Having a defined ‘look’ helps you get across what you’re about to others.
This is especially true for a creative person, who at all times, must be
a representative for their art. As a performer, I’ve had to accept the
importance of image in relation to my voice, and start to ‘craft’ a defined
look that works for me, and treat it as seriously as crafting a record, or
putting a live show together.

…This does not just stop at fashion → For example - I LOVE, nay, lluurrve
to watch America’s Next Top Model . TYRA BANKS is NO JOKE! You never know
how hard that shit Tyra is saying to the models is until you actually try
to APPLY to YOURSELF. Things like ‘smizing’ (smiling with your eyes)
and posing H-2-T (Head 2 Toe), is no walk in the park, and requires
hours in front of the mirror practicing. This is also essential in crafting
a ‘look’ - it does not just apply to models. If you’re a true performer, you
know that in addition to singing and delivering your songs, you’re also
striking poses - not only onstage, but also in front of the camera (photos,
videos), in the recording studio (vocal style), and during interviews.

So – how do you want other people to see you? How do you put a look
together that you can maintain without needing a million dollars and stylists
everywhere you go. Here’s what I’ve been learning to do:

Look through magazines – grab certain looks, hairstyles, and poses you
think are fierce and relate to what you’re doing. Spin and combine parts of
them to make it your own – and ROCK IT with confidence.

You don’t have to go on a shopping blitz and max out all your credit cards.
Pick up a piece here and a piece there, and slowly start to incorporate
them into your onstage act, and even your everyday life. Be smart about
what accessories you’re choosing. Start piecing together different outfits
that you can wear both onstage and offstage.

Practice in front of a mirror! Before bed, I have a routine to practice poses,
and ‘smizing’ (smiling with your eyes, as Tyra calls it) in front of the mirror.
Again, pick poses from artists and/or models in magazines and actually
try them in front of a mirror. Play around to make them your own, and be
creative!

Don’t leave the house without putting some thought into how you look. If
you’re a singer, you are representing yourself all-the-time. You never know
whom you’ll bump into, even at the grocery store. If, for example, a fan (or
potential fan) sees you looking bummy on the street after having seen your
live show, the fantasy and their respect for you will be lost.

Case in point, Miss Spears....

Yikes.
.....ouch.

In terms of embarrassing pictures of me and half-assed looks --> there is a lot in my past, on which i shall pass, but there'll be a lot fewer in my future.

Utilize having a look as a way to further communicate what you represent
as an artist.

Take a ‘look’;) at this article, from onstage success guru, Tom Jackson.
He talks about the importance of having a 'look' and warns that if your
music and 'look' don't go together, it could hurt your chances for success:
http://onstagesuccess.com/2010/06/what-does-your-look-say-about-you/

I highly recommend book marking Tom Jackson’s website. It is chalk FULL
of good tips on how to be a better performer.

Drake - Thank Him Later / Trent Reznor & The Business Model / Power to the Independents!

Monday, June 14th, 2010 at 12:00noon - the streets of Yonge and Dundas in Toronto are lined with eager, fresh-faced young adults parked on their cotton blankets and equipped with rations of food, sleeping bags, and pitched tents.
"Protesters?", you ask, in light of the G20 Summit, and the billion dollar price tag, that has citizens of Toronto and beyond in an uproar?

Not quite.... these dedicated souls are parked outside of the HMV Superstore at 333 Yonge Street waiting for the release of Toronto's own, Drizzy Drake's debut album, 'Thank me Later', due to come out the following day - Tuesday June 15th.

drizzy

Let me expand - the first 550 people who bought a copy of Drake's album at this specific location received a pass to come back the following week - Monday, June 21st - to MEET DRAKE and get their copy signed by the Young Money bags, Drizzy, himself. No pass? No Drake.

By 9:30am, June 15th (release day) - the line is now wrapped around the entire AMC building on Dundas, and to the Tim Hortons the next street over. For those not familiar with Tdot's streets, this line of people who have camped out on the streets all night, is approximately 300 meters long .

By 12:30 in the afternoon that day, all 550 passes to meet Drake were gone. By the end of the week, that location of HMV alone sold over 1,000 copies of 'Thank Me Later', a number UNHEARD of in today's volatile industry. Surrounding record stores quickly sold out, and now the album has hit Billboard at #1, with the first-week sales of 447,000 copies.

Check the article on YAHOO here:
http://new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart_watch/55472/week-ending-june-20-2010-lets-thank-him-now/

Now - To all the Debbie Downers out there, convinced that the music industry is DEAD, this proves otherwise, to some degree. How else are Katy Perry, Sarah McLachlan, Lady Antebellum, etc still raking in sales by the thousands? To all of the soldiers out there with a dream, and heavy persistence, this is confirmation that success in the music industry is still attainable - for the chosen few. It may not be by the millions - but after years of the industry gouging, and years and years now of access to downloading for free, there are still a substantial number of people who are willing to spend their money on music that they enjoy.

People are still out buying records, if you can give them a reason to give a fu*k!

Some may criticize Drake, and some may love him for reppin' Toronto and Canada abroad, but either way you look at it - the guy's no slacker. He's worked hard independently (on his music) to get major money and he’s still working hard and making his money, and he's proving that record sales haven't completely fallen by the wayside.
Don't agree with me? Let me know!!! Let the debate begin.

Does this mean the record industry will never die? Well, I certainly hope the way it’s been run, changes, and that the independent artist can once again control their own destiny. It could all be a ticking time bomb... but let us thank Drake for now for keeping the dream alive.

Now, here’s an interesting link to the power of independents about Nine Inch Nail’s, Trent Reznor. Check it out to learn about the Business Model, which is:
Connect With Fans + Reason To Buy = $$$$$ (and more importantly, FREEDOM)

Don't stop believing, and keep Learning To Fight!!!

Ladies and Gentleman, boys and girls, children of all ages – welcome to another edition of my “Learning to Fight” Blog as the ‘First Lady of NuFunk’ representing NuFunktonia, the Tdot Odot, Arktik Afriqua, and beyond!

First of all I'm very excited to announce that I've been nominated in the 'Best Urban' Category for the 2010 Toronto Independent Music Awards!!! And Congratulations to God Made ME Funky for being nominated in the same category as well! I'm very honoured to be among ALL of the many talented Toronto musicians nominated for the TIMA's.

Here's a link to see a list of the nominees, and get your read on about what TIMA is all about and how to get tix to the event ceremony(if ya didn't know before;)

Speaking of Independent Artists , we are in the best position now more than ever before in today's crazy music market. Gone are the days when you'd be spotted on the street or in the club and a record label would just give you a thousands and thousands of dollars in an advance, and invest even more thousands upon thousands of dollars in your career (image, videos, recordings, album costs, marketing, etc.) There's no magical bean, break, or lucky chance anymore to do it all the work for you.

Now more than ever, your path is entirely in your hands - and more and more artists are embracing the DIY model. Ie. The more you can do for yourself, the more control YOU have of your career. If you are willing to put the work in, there should be no whining about why your lucky break hasn't come for you yet. Your lucky break is the fact that you have so many resources available to you on a daily basis to just DO IT YOURSELF!!!

In my journey of Learning To Fight, I've been encountering all the work that is required to be an artist in today's industry. Absolutely NO sugar coating on this one folks--> it is A LOT of work. With this blog, I’ll you about my experiences in the hope that YOU can use it for your career, your art, your hobby or perhaps for your own general knowledge. If only there had been a 'HOW TO' guidebook when I first moved to Toronto to lay out all of the steps to become a 'successful singer in total control of your own career' . What I can do now is speak truthfully about my experiences, and hope that YOU, can apply it and learn from it, OR disagree, challenge, and offer your OWN experiences.

This blog is 'HOW TO PUT A LIVE VIDEO TOGETHER' (or, ‘HOW I PUT A LIVE VIDEO TOGETHER’).

Having a great live video of yourself is a great tool to have for your youtube channel, myspace, website, press kit, sonicbids, etc... It can showcase your true abilities, it can help to increase your online presence, and if intended as a corporate video, can be a tool for you to get corporate work (if that's a goal of yours.) Sometimes during one of your live performances, a family member or friend might be in the audience, and grab a quick clip from their cell phone or digital camera which they upload and tag you in on facebook, but the footage is shaky, the sound is completely awful, and it only catches one verse of a song. So, here's how to put together a solid live video together that you can be proud of!

1. Perform at a LIVE venue
First steps is obvious - have a live show that can be recorded. (Don't know how to get a live show together? No worries, I’ll talk about that in one of my upcoming blogs.) If you don't have a live show coming up, perhaps you could be singing at an Open mic night and record that live performance. (For a great Open Mic Night in the city, check Carolyn T's Monday Open Jam at Harlem Nightclub (67 Richmond St. E, Toronto)
Here's the FB: http://www.facebook.com/#!/group.php?gid=117316908629&ref=ts

Or Check Out Karen Figueira's Project Sound, on Wed. June 30th at Pacha Lounge:

2. Find a videographer.
There are ways you can go about this. You can look online for videographers / filmakers out there. What's worked for me, is to put up posters at Ryerson or George Brown (both have film programs) which are chalk full of film students eager to get out there and start shooting for practice, and to start building their own portfolio's as budding young professionals.

Here's a wicked video of my CD Release party last year, done by Adam Schoales, a good friend of mine and film student at Ryerson (also partially filmed by Nate Storring) BIG UPS TO ADAM AND NATE!!!

3.Know what kind of video you are going for / What's your plan with the video?
Is it a corporate video that you're going for, or a video to show off a new song that you're working on, or more of a music video style?

Depending on what you want the video for, you may or may not require your videographer to edit or do colour correction to the video. If it's a corporate video, editing is not really necessary (you could do it in iMovie or Windows Movie Maker). However, if it's more of a film-style, it will definitely need to be edited.

4. Know what kind of camera will be used to shoot.
Will it be a sony handycam (not really usable for television broadcast, but fine for the internet), or will it be a Canon 5D? (usable for television broadcast). If your plan is to have a corporate video, footage shot on a sony handycam is all you need. Very little editing is necessary for a corporate video. (Just make sure your videographer gets some good footage of a crowd dancing and having a good time to your music - this will always be impressive to a potential client wanting to book you for their event)

If you're planning to make more of a film-style video, a Canon 5D, 7D, or very affordable rebel T2i are great cameras to get more of that movie-esque look.

5. Talk to the soundman at the live performance to see if you can get a recording from the board mix.
A video could LOOK absolutely amazing, but if the audio is terrible, your video won't have the same impact and finesse. Arrange with your soundman at your show to get a good recording of the board mix. Communicate this with your videographer, and get the audio to them so he/she can synch the audio with the footage.

6. Ask for a rough draft of the video.
Ask your videographer to send you a rough draft of the video before it is posted, and communicate any changes you would like to see made to it.

7. Upload away for ALL TO SEE

If you are happy with your video - start your uploading! You now have a great tool for everyone to HEAR and SEE your talents.

The more videos that you have, the more tools you have to show off your versatility, your range, and build your online presence!

Stay tuned for more 'Learning To Fight' blogs. Please feel free to leave questions, comments, concerns, suggestions!

Learning To Fight Blog #8 - ♥ Happy Happy post-Mother's Day Edition!!! ♥

Learning To Fight Blog #8 - ♥ Happy Happy post-Mother's Day Edition!!! ♥

Ladies and Gentleman, boys and girls, children of all ages – welcome to ROUND 8 (♥ Happy Happy post-Mother's Day Edition!!! ♥ ) of my “Learning to Fight” Blog as the ‘First Lady of NuFunk’ representing NuFunktonia, the Tdot Odot, Arktik Afriqua, and beyond!

Mother's Day has just passed, and I wanna give a special shout-out to allllll the mama's out there!!! Hope everyone was able to tell their mom this weekend, in their own way, how much you love 'em:) I, for one, KNOW that I - First Lady of NuFunk, Dana Jean Phoenix - would NOT be here and "Learning To Fight" if it weren't for my mom believing in me and encouraging me to never give up every step of the way. You may get a thousand chances in life, but you only get ONE set of parents...
I LOVES YA, MOM!

Wow.. so it's now Spring of 2010 and so much has been happening! I was just recently in Pennsylvania opening for SEAN KINGSTON w. God Made ME Funky at Penn State, Altoona, and also played the Toronto FREEDOM FESTIVAL w. God Made ME Funky. 40, 000 people! Damn! Shout outs to Jay Cleary for such a wicked festival at Queen's Park that just keeps getting better and better every year. I want to thank everyone who has purchased a copy of my album 'Learning To Fight', whether that be on iTunes, Amazon, or at HMV! Because of you guys - I am now on my SECOND RUN of CD's - and they are BACK in stock at the HMV Superstore, Downtown Toronto. (In the Urban Department under 'P' for 'Phoenix' ;) If you haven't already, go pick up a copy! And if you have picked up a copy, go pick one up for your mother, a brother, a sister, or a friend!!!

Now, because this is a special post-Mother's Day Edition of the LTF Blog, I feel compelled to talk a little bit about how other strong women have inspired me lately. Shout-outs to all the ladies of 'Obeah Opera' - Nicole, Abena, Amina, and Saidah. We recently remounted this wonderful piece, written and directed by Nicole Brooks, at Rock.Paper.Sistahz.9 with overwhelmingly positive responses! So inspiring to share the stage with so many powerhouses and goddesses. Special shout outs to Saidah Baba Talibah who is doing-her-thing & Rockin' the Canadian Scene. Her EP, "The Phone Demos" is available NOW - and If you don't know, then you SHOULD know.. just visit www.myspace.com/saidahbabatalibah Trust me :)

Woah...Man, Nothing like being in the presence of STRONG females, to stay focused, and keep learning to fight..

Speaking of which, I recently booked my very first gig(s) all on my own - no helpers, just me. Contacting the club(s), dealing the owner(s), making sure my band is properly taken care of, and taking care of all of the details was all part of this experience. It may not seem like such a big leap - but in talking to a lot of up and coming musicians out there, it's not always as easy as one would think. Many of my peers out there complain that bars and clubs just don't give a chance to the new, up 'n' coming, and for lack-of-a-better-term "less well known" artists. Club-owners are so set on booking the well-established bands that have been around for years, that there leaves little chance for fresh young talent to have a shot to develop, hone in on their live performance skills, and start to build a following. That's why I'm always frequently attending, and have been a huge advocate of open mic nights, where you can try new things, make mistakes, and really start develop your "chops". If it weren't for my girl, Karen Figueira's PROJECT SOUND, or Carolyn T's OPEN JAM NIGHT @ Harlem, I would not have been able to develop my live stage show the way I have in the last couple of years. Hmmmm...both nights have been run by women. I'm noticing a pattern here about the ladies in the Toronto Music Scene ;) I just feel blessed to be amongst these amazing individuals.

Yes, NuFunktonians, summer is FAST approaching and there will be lots of stuff comin' down the pike. Just did an interview on the D'Anise show on Thatchannel.com! Shout outs to D'Anise, the talented and vibrant host of Canada's LONGEST RUNNING Online Radio Station!
Watch out for a copy of the interview posted soon!

Also, I can't leave without telling everybody about the Long-Weekend Madness going on at the Rivoli, on May 22nd. I will be hitting the stage (w/ ya boy PHATT al), alongside two seriously funky bands, Pure Finesse, and The Groove Suit! NUFUNK will definitely be in the HOUSE! So, mark it on yo calendars, and click 'Attending' on the event page:
http://www.facebook.com/?r..ef=home#!/event.php?eid=12..0477064638032&ref=ts

And JUNE 5th, it will be going down at Bar Italia (582 College St.) Saturday Night(s) Live is NOT something you wanna miss, NuFunktonians.

AND, this just in.. Saturday, July 17th at 5pm, I'll be hitting the New Generation Stage at the Toronto Beaches Jazz Fest.

Yes yes y'all. Summer will be HOT and NuFunk will definitely be present!

Thanks for all your continued support. Much Love to all my supporters and fans ♥ ♥ ♥
And don’t forget, EVERYDAY IS MOTHER’S DAY!!!

Now let's get ready to RRRRrrrumble!!!

Ladies and Gentleman, boys and girls, children of all ages – welcome to ROUND 7 (HAPPY SHINEY NEW YEAR EDITION) of my “Learning to Fight” Blog as the ‘First Lady of NuFunk’ representing NuFunktonia, the Tdot Odot, Arktik Afriqua, and beyond!

Well, well, well. You’ve all heard the saying before: ‘When one door closes, another opens’. 2009 has officially ended and 2010 is now upon us!!! I’m hoping that everyone had a great holiday season and rang in the new year with loved ones. It’s always interesting to reflect on the past year and make note of all the growth and positive changes that have occurred. I’ve been looking back the year that’s just gone by, and it’s really amazing how much has happened. I’ve gone through some pretty big changes…..

Coming out with my first ever Debut EP ‘Learning To Fight’ was, and still is, a dream come true, and it’s thanks to all of my PHOENIXTONIANS- à friends, family, and fans who have been supportive 200% of the way. Sitting alone in a room, with a keyboard, writing songs is hard enough. But to go through the process of writing, recording, producing an entire CD, not to mention planning out the theme, design, and artwork of the album was such a mountain of growth, it really does make one look back and say ‘Wow, I really did that!!!’ – with big help, of course, from some very talented musicians, and producers ;) So for all who have been a part of my ‘Learning to Fight’ experience thus far, I say thank-you. The learning, and the fighting, only gets more intense from here on in!

‘Learning to Fight’ is now available in several stores, and has sold out several times at the HMV Superstore downtown Toronto among other hmv’s in Toronto and Waterloo. In 2009, I started doing my own gigs with my own band, had 2 successful cd release parties where I raised money for charity. I started a women’s group called, ‘Let’s Hear It for The Girls’, and held meetings where professional ladies gathered to share and build for a stronger female artistic community. Attending and participating in several music business seminars this year has also proved to be greatly informative, and I’ve made some great connections through these as well!

I went on a west-coast tour of Canada with God Made ME Funky (www.myspace.com/godmademefunky) which was such an incredible opportunity. I got to see just how rich and diverse the incredible landscape of Canada is, and play to packed houses of fans from all different shapes, sizes, backgrounds, styles, ages.

I also toured to the U.S this year with God Made Me Funky. First, to NEW YORK (concrete jungle where dreams are made of ;) and then to Cincinnati where I met, and partied with the LEGENDARY BOOTSY COLLINS – and to boot, he picked up my CD :)

And so, a new year, a new chance to build and grow HARDER, BETTER, FASTER, STRONGER. A new door has opened, so let’s all choose to not only walk through it, but blast through it SO HARD that there’s no door left - not even to close behind us.

2010 is kicking off in a big way, folks! I’ll be performing at Caesar Martini’s in Waterloo on Friday, January 22nd for the ‘Touch of Soul’ series. Proceeds from the night will go to the local FOOD BANK. So come on out, for some good ol’ fashioned funk, soul, and of course some ‘Learning to Fight’ favourites!

This year will not be spent lying down – it’s all about getting up on your feet and moving. So come join me on Jan. 22nd for some dancing, and fun… and stay tuned for many more shows to come this year!!! My band – the PHOENIX are on FIRE, and it’s only gonna get more hot from here on in!

Also, check me out on Royalty Radio Tuesday, Jan. 12th at 8pm eastern-time at www.cfreradio.com. I’ll be sitting down with DJ ANDRE to talk about what’s in store for 2010.

I’ve been told this is what happens when you don’t let any doors close and kick all of them wide op. So what are we waiting for? Let’s Get Ready to RUMBBBLLEEE!!!
